It depends. Your vet will evaluate your pet to determine if they are a good candidate for vaccines. Ideally, pets should be relatively healthy to get the maximum benefits from vaccines. There are cases, however, where it is much safer to vaccinate a pet right away even if they are not feeling 100% healthy. For example, animals from shelters often have pre-existing health problems, but they are still vaccinated to protect them and other animals around them from further harm. It’s important to remember that ALL pets should be vaccinated.
Vaccines are divided into 2 main types: core and non-core. Core vaccines are considered as mandatory. The Rabies vaccine is a core vaccine that is actually required by law. Non-core vaccines are recommended based on your pet’s unique situation. For example, a hunting dog may need different non-core vaccines versus one that spends most of their time indoors. Either way, all pets need to be vaccinated.
Puppies can receive their first batch of shots as early as 6 to 8-weeks-old. (This is usually the point when they are weaned from their mothers.) Then they will need to receive additional injections/boosters once every 2 to 4 weeks until they are about 4-months-old.
If you recently inherited a pet or adopted one, you may not have access to their vaccination history. Simply schedule an appointment with our team, and one of our veterinarians can assess your pet. They will make the proper recommendations on what to do moving forward based on your pet’s specific case.
